For those of you who enjoy real-life hockey (and not just the fictional type I write) I am sure you know that hockey season has officially kicked off.

I had a great time watching the Penguins beat the Rangers 3-1 on Tuesday night in the first game of the season.

It’s too early to say anything, but for all of the doom and gloom predictions about the team’s lack of potential this season, there are some fun and exciting things happening.

The question has been if it’s possible to rebuild the team quickly with fresh young talent in addition to the veteran talent, and give the team a shot at the Stanley Cup playoffs without sacrificing its future success.

Will the Penguins have one more year of being really really terrible before things get better? Or are they ready to hit the ground running now?

After the pre-season and the first official game of the regular season, a lot of people are starting to lean toward the former.

In addition to our trio of old men (Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang) there are some very talented new prospects who are showing a lot of promise. More than anyone anticipated, in fact.

While I miss the team’s previous coach, the new one really seems to have lit a fire under the guys and the new systems seem to be yielding some positive changes. Only time will tell where that all takes the team but it’s exciting to look forward to.

There’s nothing like a new season of hockey!
