As many of you know, Luke Crawford first showed up in Changing the Rules as the asshole Gabriel Theriault got into a fight with. That fight spilled off the ice and ultimately led to Gabriel’s trade to Evanston. So, if you think about it, Luke is really the reason Gabriel & Lance met and fell in love …
But from the moment Luke appeared on the scene, I knew he needed his own story. And that it would be a long while before that story happened. He had several appearances in the Rules of the Game series and the Relationship Goalsseries, and I started building his character more and more. He’s had such a great role as a side character in the Scoring Chances series but he needed juuuuust a little more time to develop.
Because he wasn’t going to get just any love story. Oh no. Not my grumpy enforcer. He needed someone who would totally rattle him. Someone who would get under his skin. The very last person who he would ever, ever want to fall in love with.
Enter … Sebastian.
Sebastian Breckon is a florist. He loves his sister and his niece and even moved to Boston to help them out. A nice, easy-going guy, except when it comes to hockey. When it comes to hockey, all bets are off. And he can hold a grudge.
Specifically, against Luke. The guy who took out his best friend and captain of the New York Rockets—his favorite team.
He can be a little quirky. After all, how many people buy season tickets to root against the opponents? But he loves hockey and it’s the perfect excuse to sit near the penalty box and chirp Luke Crawford. Not to mention it’s the perfect stress relief after expanding his floral business from New York to Boston.
Neither of them expect to match on a hookup app and find themselves face-to-face on the doorstep of Sebastian’s shop but it isn’t long before their clothes are off and sparks are flying.
When I planned the story, I didn’t expect Luke to tell me he was on the aromantic spectrum. Or for Sebastian to be the kind of guy who is looking for something a little different from the white-picket-fence kinda life.
But watching the emotions deepen between them as they try to figure out how to navigate it was so, so rewarding.
For years, my tagline has been heartfelt, hard-won happily ever afters, but this story might be my best version of that yet.
