A DAY OUT

collage from my day out

On Saturday, I woke up with a migraine attack but was able to take meds early and rest for a couple of hours until I felt good enough to go to a small art fair. I met my parents there and we browsed for a couple of hours. I got a cherry and ginger wine slushy (10/10 would recommend, although they had delicious sounding non-alcoholic ones as well) and sipped that while we wandered around.

It was about 75 degrees out, which is about 10 degrees warmer than I personally enjoy, but it really was lovely weather to be outside in. The leaves were falling so it made for a very picturesque day.

Although there were lots of pretty things, I ended up buying a small ceramic vase in one of my favorite colors. It was actually on sale for $15, marked down from a very reasonable $25, because there were small bubbles in the glaze. I spoke with the potter about it, and he said that it’s one of the most difficult glaze colors to work with. Am I surprised that my favorite is the most difficult to achieve? Absolutely not. That is pretty on brand for me. Oops.

After my parents and I went our separate ways, I had a couple of hours to kill and stopped by a bookstore. I found a couple of books that seemed perfect for spooky season! Carmilla, the dark sapphic romance that inspired Dracula, by Sheridan Le Fanu and The Resurrectionist by A. Rae Dunlap, which is a twisty Gothic mystery of dark Scottish history. Perfect for this time of year.

If only it would stop being 80+ degrees in October …

My friend was running a bit late due to traffic, so I got a table at the Ethiopian restaurant and read and enjoyed a glass of iced Ethiopian tea (SO GOOD) while I waited. We shared a delicious vegetarian sampler platter (she’s veggie, I’m happy to eat whatever is delicious) and ate until we might burst. They bring you steaming hot towels to clean your hands before and after and you eat all of the food (lentils, greens, veggies, etc.) with a soft, spongy flatbread called injera. It’s a lovely experience and if you’ve never tried Ethiopian food and you have a restaurant in your area, I HIGHLY recommend it. It is so, so flavorful. The meat options are also delicious, and I’ve enjoyed them when I’ve eaten with people who enjoy meat.

After dinner, we wandered around for a bit, checked out a few more bookstores, then headed home. On the drive home, I listened to the first period of the Penguins game on the radio, then managed to time it that I arrived at home in time for the first intermission and watched the rest of it from the comfort of my couch.

Truly a fantastic day. Hopefully someday soon I can have a lot more of these fun days and a whole lot less feeling like crap. A girl can dream!
